A lot of the chalutzim, from Europe, had socialist or communists beliefs. In fact, the kibbutz system, agricultural communes, were the only time communism has succeeded, without coercion. Many of the banks originated as workers' collectives, that's why they have names like Hapoelim (the workers). Sports teams have the name hapoelim, as well. The main workers' collective, hahistradrut, was the framework of all social services. In the contest between middle-eastern Jews, Mitzrachim, of the Etzel and the Haganah of European Ashkenazim, Haganah won. It was the communist Ashkenazim, who formed the original government. Why wouldn't an essentially communist Israel have a close tie with the USSR? Of course, Israel got tired of the over 300% inflation they suffered, because of the strong power of the histradrut, and Mitzrachi and Sephardi Jews got tired of the discrimination they faced. That is when the Likud party came to power, and thanks to the economic principles of Nissim Baruch (z"l), managed to bring inflation down to reasonable levels, and make the country the powerhouse it is today.
