Gerrymandering, by both parties, has made politics more extreme. Most politicians are far more worried about being primaried by an extremist, in their own party, than losing reelection to the other side. That makes politicians move towards the crazy fringe. And sane moderates, who would otherwise be willing to pass bipartisan bills, are afraid of angering an extremist base. If you don't believe me, look at the vitriol directed at Cheney, for daring to acknowledge that Biden won, or Manchin, for daring to vote against an inflationary bill. Both stuck by their convictions, rather than toe the party line, and are being pilloried for it.
