Really? The protests started, when people died in a building fire. They could not escape, because they were physically locked into their apartment, and the fire department could not reach them, because of Covid road blocks. Chinese students, have studied in the US for at least 60 years, but that hasn't led to a demand for freedom before. Chinese complained about the draconian measures, taken to fight Covid-19, before, but always backed down because they went meant to save lives. But, now they have cost lives, they will no longer be silent. A dam has broken, and all the pent up rage, resulting from no personal freedom, has burst loose.

People will accept a lot, if they think everyone has to follow the same rules, and accept the same hardships. But, Xi is in his third term as leader, despite rules made to prevent this. And now, the Chinese see the rest of the world is no longer quarantining, but living life fully, while they are still in a draconian lockdown. And people have died, from the lockdown, which was meant to prevent deaths. So, it seems, only the Chinese people must follow rules, not their leader, and only the Chinese people must suffer quarantine, not the rest of the world. And that is intolerable.
