  1. They'd seen incompetent, power hungry leaders, who governed poorly (ie. George III). There is a reason, that they gave the legislature the greatest power, and made them the Article I branch of government. They wanted to prevent something like Trump.

  2. It's less a condemnation of the GOP, and more proof why it is intelligent for the Democrats to have special delegates. The Republican party has no special delegates, and that left it open to usurpation by a populous demagogue. Responsible Republicans were beside themselves, when Trump hijacked their party, but could do nothing to stop him. The Democratic party avoided this problem. First, Democratic voters overwhelmingly rejected the populace demagogue, who tried to hijack our party. (Only the young, ignorant of the perils of a soviet system, and the very stupid, voted for him.) But, even if the voters had failed to reject him, there were still special delegates available, to prevent his nomination. If only the GOP had special delegates, would never have been rules by this orange, would-be dictator.
