  4. @Thomas Butler Putin remains in power by subverting the Russian election process, and through actions against his opponents. When he see a political opponent, first he tries to discredit them, by making up scandalous lies, like they are a white supremacist, and disseminating that information, often on social media. If that fails, he has his operatives poison them. If that fails, he throws them in jail. Trump tried to do the first, against Biden, by strong-arming Ukraine. US operatives are only allowed to collect information, not engage in the sort of activities the FSK does, so Trump failed in his bid to remain in power.
