When I was getting my degree in microbiology, I took an epidemiology seminar course. It was lead by this Rockefeller fellow, Telford Work, who had traveled all over the world, even Nazi Germany, determining how various epidemics got started, and how to stop them.(Some of this work was done prior to antibiotics.) He set up a retrovirus pandemic scenario, with every student portraying a different government's response team leader. (Lucky me, I got to be the USSR, the country with the worst medical infrastructure. A country where all medical research had been perverted by a false belief in Lysenko's theory of evolution.) Every time we thought we had it contained, he threw a new outbreak at us. In the end, we lost a third of the world's population. (When HIV started showing its ugly head (called GRID then) all of us, that had been involved in that scenario, got out of work that would expose us to blood.) Covid-19 isn't a retrovirus, but it is taking a course a lot like the one Dr. Work put us through hell with, although faster and less lethal. I sure hope it has a better ending.
