First, South Africa is a younger nation than the US and Europe. Second, much of South Africa's population has already had Covid-19 before, so the most vulnerable people are already dead. Look at the data, most of the people, who caught omicron, had one or two previous Covid-19 infections, so had some immunity. Of course the disease is milder in those with some immunity. Even though antibodies, either from infection or vaccination, aren't a great match with omicron epitopes, T cell epitopes are much more conserved. Cellular immunity, not humoral, was why the disease was so mild. And this variant hasn't been proven to be more infectious, just highly immune evasive.
