We used to have some campaign finance laws, that limited the amount any one individual or corporation could contribute to a candidate. But, in 2010, SCOTUS decided that money was speech, and therefore could not be limited. If you're upset with money in politics, you're upset with the Supreme Court.

@Leskeepingitreal In some states, convicts can vote. And whatever happened to the presumption of innocence?

Easier said than done. People have been debating going to a popular vote, at least since the 1960s. But, that would require the states, that have more power than their population warrants, agreeing to give up that power, by ratifying the amendment to do so. Considering human nature, that just won't happen.

"How Democracies Die" is better. It doesn't blame one side, for problems caused by both sides.

@sherylchapman4168 But, it is the voters who are supposed to decide who should be in office, not a faceless bureaucracy. The FBI does background checks, and they are known to be quite conservative. What if they starting rejecting anyone whose politics were too far left?

At least the German people didn't elect Hitler. He was appointed chancellor.

Vote for the best candidate, who most closely matches your own ideals. Straight ticket voting is for fools, who don't bother to research the candidates.

Look at what happens in Russia. If any politician gets too popular, they are indicted on some fabricated crime, and made ineligible to run. To pass a law, making it illegal to run for office while indicted, invites similar misuse of the DOJ. We've had a presidential candidate run from prison, Eugene Debbs, so this is not new ground.

@elizabethstanley7137 A popular vote doesn't mean the more populist states pick all the leaders. That is a complete red herring. Blue states have conservative voters, and red states have liberals. What the popular vote would mean is each citizen's vote is equal to the next. And if you're a conservative living in California, your vote would finally matter. As it is now, if one lives in a solidly red or blue state, voter turnout is suppressed, by the knowledge that your vote won't change anything.

Since my state has voted only by mail, since 1998, the only election workers are paid, not volunteers. There are no polls to man, only ballots to be processed and counted.
