cervellone Influenza viruses are different from coronaviruses. The influenza genes are broken into 7 (type C) or 8 (types A and B) subunits. Each subunit codes for a different antigen. During co-infection, two different influenza strains can swap subunits, creating a new strain with a novel set of antigens. That is why so many new flu strains arise each year, and we need to be vaccinated against these new strains.
Coronavirus is a single, single stranded, positive-sense RNA virus. It cannot swap around subunits. Yes, there arose a spike protein mutation, on those mink farms, which could have caused problems. That is why all those mink were destroyed, so it would not get into the human population. There has been only one other mutation in the spike proteins in humans, and that has not affected the efficacy of any of the vaccines. If the spike protein were to mutate too much, the virus would no longer be able to attach to the ACE-2 receptor, and enter a host cell.
