Zakaria just blew past the fact that the muddle surrounding the election of 1776 resulted in a compromise that ended Reconstruction. He also neglected to tell the whole truth about what is happening in Portland. It has not been mostly peaceful, it has been mostly destructive. There are people that flood into our city for any reason. They camp out in the public parks, so the actual citizens of the city dare not use them. They rove the nearby neighborhoods, stealing and vandalizing homes, and throwing fireworks at people trying to just go about their lives. Sure, there are some misguided locals, who have joined in. But, most of the people destroying our city are outsiders, who treat this like Burning Man, and don't give a damn about the local people.
