  1. The military didn't need advice from Trump. What they needed was authorization to act. When Trump would not give that, they turned to Pence. It was Pence who authorized the National Guard response. Typically, only the president (not the speaker, and certainly not the mayor) authorizes National Guard deployment in the District of Columbia. But, as the president refused to do his duty, they turned to the vice president. I never thought I's say this, but thank g_d for Pence.
