Historically, Virginia has elected a governor from a different party of the president. The only time recently, that has not held was when McAuliffe was elected last time. His Republican opponent was Ken Cuccinelli, who was virulently homophobic. Then McAuliffe might have only won because Cuccinelli was so vile, as the difference in votes was much less than the number of votes that went to the Libertarian, Sarvis. Several pundits have stated that Sarvis got the votes of those who would have voted Republican, but could not pull the lever for Cuccinelli. I'm not certain that conservatives and moderates, disgusted by Youngkin would vote for Princess Blanding, as she is more a police reform candidate, and not your typical Libertarian candidate, but more left than McAuliffe. So, McAuliffe will have a difficult time winning, and that was only made harder when he stated that parents shouldn't interfere with what their children are taught in school. Maybe, considering Biden's tanking poll numbers, McAuliffe would be better served distancing himself.
