  1. Cooper's right. When I studied microbiology at UCLA, we were told that the "Spanish flu" actually originated in northern China. It was brought to Europe by laborers brought in to replace conscripted workers in France and England. The last epidemic we had in this country was labeled the Hong Kong flu, even though it originated in mainland China. SARS also originated in China. We cannot label every disease that originates in China the "Chinese virus" because it would just be too confusing, too many viruses emerge there.
