All these fools commenting, that he should have respected Qatar's unenlightened culture, are missing the point. Qatar invited the world, and promised to abide by certain rules, like allowing alcohol at the games, and respecting women's rights and gay people. Instead, they continued in their medieval mindset, and harassed people. If this journalist had been having sex, with another guy, in the street, that would have been disrespectful, and merit detention. But, merely wearing a rainbow shirt is not. Qatar has shown no respect to those they invited. Such an inhospitable host deserves no respect in return.

It's not just their backwards attitude towards gay people, that should have kept the games out of Qatar. It is also the way they enslaved foreign workers, allowing them to die from terrible working conditions. It is the medieval way they treat their women. And it is their banning of alcohol. If they had been honest, and admitted they would not allow alcohol, they would never have gotten the games, despite billions in bribes. Instead, they said beer could be sold, then reneged the day before the first match. Football was invented by the Brits, and is often called "the English game", and British football fans expect to be able to drink beer. It is as much a part of the experience, as scarves with team colors. If they are unwilling to stomach other nation's cultural norms, they should never have hosted the games.
