@Andrew Warther Agriculture is not the problem, California produces more agricultural product than any other state, yet is hurt by the Electoral College. The problem is a lack of decent education in rural areas. I grew up in rural California, and was the first person, from my town, to graduate with a pure science degree, from the UC system. I was not adequately prepared for university, and made it through on determination and intelligence. Students from LA or SF had already taken AP calculus and science. Not only did my high school not offer any AP classes, but we didn't have any calculus at all. If I had wanted to study crop science, I'd have been well prepared, but only that field had decent classes. Rural schools are insufficient, and mostly produce resentful individuals. Improve education in rural areas, and people will be less resentful, with no desire to stick it to urban folk.

@OneEyedJack1970 We are the first modern democracy. The problem is, when our Constitution was written, there really was no blueprint on how to do it. The Founding Fathers were enlightened, educated and intelligent, but had no real examples to go by, so made mistakes, The four biggest mistakes were, establishing a presidency, slavery, lack of universal suffrage for adults, and the Electoral College. If they'd had more examples, they probably would have gone with a parliamentary system, but in their day, there was always a supreme ruler. It took a while to eliminate many of those problems, and develop into a true country, rather than a loose affiliation of states, which we no longer are.
