  1. It has been corrupt in both red and blue states, for a very long time. My family was friends with the woman who was minority leader of the California statehouse, Carol Hallett. She lived on the ranch where she, and three generations before here, had been raised. She was the type of politician, who was always willing to reach across the aisle, to get good legislation passed. But, she did not toe the party line, and instead voted the way her constituents wanted. Thus the Republicans did not like her, and as she was very popular in her district, could not be primaried out. The Democrats didn't like her, because of her popularity with the people, as well, because they had hoped to swing her district in their direction. So, both parties agreed to gerrymander her out of her district, and redrew district lines so her family ranch was included in a very urban area, where only Democrats won. The map was really odd, with this pseudopod, reaching out from Santa Barbara, to envelop just her property, leaving all the other ranchland alone.
