It emerged in Africa around the 1960s, was brought to Cuba after 1975 (by soldiers fighting in Angola) then circulated through the Caribbean, and was brought to the US in the late 1970s. We saw the first cases in LA around 1977, and patient zero was a gay flight attendant. Scientific politics wanted the disease (GRID) to be genetic, so nobody got research grants to find the retrovirus until around 1980. As to the current pandemic, Israel found this variant rapidly, as they test everyone flying into the country, and sequence samples from suspect countries.

  3. The main reason this particular coronavirus has spread so well is, unlike most viruses, you are most infectious in the first four days, before any symptoms occur. This virus really has a very short incubation period. ie. not much delay at all

  5. Or, rather than stranding people, just require two weeks quarantine, and test all returnees. Stop flights going into those countries, and non-residents arriving, sure. But, you can't leave Americans abroad indefinitely.

  6. A positive PCR test does not demonstrate infection, but presence of viral proteins. You can be exposed, and test positive, but the virus never takes hold in your body.

  7. Since Israel tests everyone, at the airport, they were caught, as people returned from Africa, and will not be spreading in the population. Also, there is absolutely no evidence this variant is "more infectious". Stop making crap up.

  8.  @babyboo2587  So, people should be stranded in South Africa? Also, the people infected with this strain, that returned to Israel, were in Botswana, not South Africa. Israel's response is to require everyone returning, from any part of Africa, to isolate for two weeks. Except of course, the entire delegation that just went to Morocco. The rules don't apply to member of the coalition.

  9. So, the reporter here is wrong. The variant B.1.1.529 has a Greek name, nu (v). Yes, it has about 30 mutations in the spike protein, but just like previous variants, the vaccines still prevent hospitalization, in most people. Maybe, not as well, but they still work. Nu seems to be fitter, so will probably become the predominant strain, sickening the unvaccinated soon.
