  3. You over simplify. They rose when the Whigs fell in the 1850s. The catholics that were coming in then were poor and uneducated, their arrival saw a rise is welfare costs and crime. They weren't so much anti-immigrant as anti unskilled immigrant, feeling jobs should first go to Americans. They were popular with middle class and lower class Americans.Wanting to help your own first is compassionate, not ugly.
