  1. The people coming to the border are not facing genocide or persecution, which is what asylum is supposed to be for. Most are coming to make more money, and claim to be escaping gang violence. Those gangs exist mainly because of our war on drugs. This useless attempt to stop the flow of drugs to US users has been going on since the early 1970s. All it has resulted in is rich gangs and the incarceration of far too many of our citizens. It has destabilized many Central American countries and Mexico. Alcohol prohibition did not work, and gave rise to gangs. Why do we expect drug prohibition to do otherwise? Rather than continuing to treat drug use as a criminal problem, we should treat it as a medical problem. If we stop arresting people, and instead treat their addiction, we will have fewer people in jail and stop causing unrest in Central American countries, and lower the rate of injected drug users contracting diseases such as AIDS.
