In 2021, we were still very much in pandemic times. Mothers were often not allowed to bring family to births, for important emotional support. After giving birth, with the loss of healthcare workers, getting follow up care was more difficult. And, lets not forget having Covid-19 while pregnant, not only often caused miscarriages, among the unvaccinated, it also often killed unvaccinated mothers. Pregnancy also can cause diabetes and heart problems, health ailments that are twice as likely in black people, and other minorities, than in whites. This increases the maternal mortality rate. And when you factor in, the initial reluctance, among minority communities, to increase survival rates, through Covid-19 vaccines, it isn't surprising minorities have a higher maternal mortality rate.
