No, you don't "have to assume for a second, that he's been told there is fraud", because he was actually told over and over and over again, that there was insufficient fraud to change the results, by many of his people. What you need to assume is, he was told there was no fraud, that he lost, but didn't care. From this correct starting point, the only viable conclusion was, he intended to stay in power through a soft coup.
