They destroyed our elk statue in Portland. It beautified our city for 120 years, and now it's gone.

Two out of ten descendants who have expressed an opinion want it down, the rest do not. Those eight should have a say too.
2
First, it forbids carved, not graven images. Second, it specifically refers to representations of what is in the heavens. Learn Hebrew, you got it wrong.
1
You need to learn Hebrew, the word translates to carved, not graven. And that mitzvah specifically says not to make representations of what is in heaven.
1
Baldwin, Gilman, Jenifer, and Alexander Martin were lifelong bachelors.
1
No, it's not. And they are only two of many descendants. Others do not agree.
1
That is a poor translation. It should be no carved images. It specifically says not to make images of what is in the heavens, or under the ground.
1
@deontaylor1547 They only interviewed the two that are in favor of this travesty, not the eight who are not. And Jefferson's memory belongs to the nation he helped found, not just his descendants. The memorial should stay where it belongs.

How do you "warship" something? Does that require a naval attack?
1
There are two that I know of, one in New York City, the other in Boston. Of course, with so many statues being torn down by idiots, like the ones that tore down the Frederick Douglas statue, one or two may be gone now.

Martin L Have you read his first draft? He did want to end slavery
1
She has four. And Jefferson was definitely one of the good guys.
1
Go to the Pan American Union Building in Wasington, DC. You'll find it there.
1
A lot of women have had children, but only one person was responsible for the Declaration of Independence.
1
@ktraglin Do you think the monuments to Jefferson exist because he owned slaves or because he wrote the Declaration of Independence, helped form our country, and was an early president? If the former, you are correct. If the latter, your argument is truly moronic. Most people would say it is the latter. By the way, most slave owners purchased them from someone who purchased them from the Arabs. I really doubt any of the slave owners in this country did the actual enslavement.
1
Two want it down, eight want it to remain. Majority rules. It should stay.
1
I never thought he was a great president. I grew up in California, and was going to UCLA in 1979. I knew that he had been a wastrel of a governor, and was not going to vote for him. Instead, I campaigned hard for Anderson. Reagan was even worse than my expectations.
1
Do you mean traitors? I agree about the confederate statues put up in the 20th century. They were erected as an assault on black people. But, the ones that were erected directly after the war on battlegrounds should remain as a monument to those who gave their lives, even if it was a misguided cause.
1
What about the other descendants that disagree? There are more of them. Why should their rights be negated?
1
What amazes me, is that you don't know she has at least four statues to her memory.
1
They aren't the only descendants, they are just the only ones who want the memorial gone.
1
A stature of Frederick Douglas existed, but was brought down by rioters recently. There are four statues of Harriet Tubman. There is a statue to George Washington Carver at his birthplace in Missouri.

Delage Eric What about white people who had slaves as their ancestors? What about white people whose family migrated here long after slavery existed? What about white people whose ancestors were abolitionists or never owned slaves? Slavery is not the worst thing that can happen to a people. Most of my family was murdered by the Nazis. I wish they had just been slaves. I'm not insisting the Germans put food on my table.
1
Do you think that Jefferson was a Confederate?
