  2. South Carolina, I think it is, that has more blacks than any other ethnicity. They were poor and held back economically and socially, so there was less chance of them building up a huge city. They take more to farming small plots of land like maybe in Africa. I think it is the social dynamics that really determines how a region grows. There was such a stilted society along the coast with rich landholders being very few and then huge numbers of black slaves. How do people with a slave mentality who were used to seeing no opportunity and being told what to do suddenly going to take it upon themselves to build huge economic hubs? There is nothing wrong with the area. There are very popular resorts there like Myrtle Beach and now Hilton Head is being built up out from under the blacks who held title to that land for decades and farmed it for themselves. Now that corporations and not personal wealth are determining development, we may start to see new growth patterns.
