We need more bosses like this. A lot of the reason people aren't working is because the bosses think they can treat them like slaves who have the privilege of working for them.

This is why you either have homeless camps or fields of McMansions springing up all over. Everyone is either very rich or very poor while the middle class disappears. This is about wages. It used to be that a modest middle class neighborhood would have minimum wage workers living side by side with professionals and small business owners, each owning a similar house, driving cars, and raising families. Now forget it. If you are just a security guard or a mechanic working for a shop, you can't afford this lifestyle.

@MH-53E There is a story now on youtube from CBS news about a mail carrier with five children who ended up having to sleep in her car with them until she went to a shelter and then got another place. These are essential jobs where the workers are being treated like they are expendable. How can this country celebrate Labor Day without appreciating the laborer?

You know how much money it costs to get into a carnival, pay for rides, pay for vending space? They are making huge profits. They can afford to pay the attendants.

Rather than overhaul the whole financial system, why not just require the boss to pay equitably? It should be the workers are getting the larger share of the money since they are doing most of the work. If they were paid well, they would probably do a better job, and there wouldn't be as many shoddily constructed houses. They would pay more attention to detail instead of just getting through the day feeling like a resentful slave. A lot of people are wiling to pay more for fair trade goods produced overseas. How about fair trade companies in the USA? I would trust the job done by one of them over one that is trying to get rich as fast as possible at the expense of its employees.

@swm-sm6cu The workers could get basic pay up front and then get the rest when the house is sold. I am sure a whole team of workers are doing the actual construction for $20,000 when you say the boss gets $80,000 for pushing a few papers. How does that make you feel? How does that make you regard the work you are doing? Are you going to go the extra mile to do the work perfectly, or just enough to get by or get away with without getting in trouble? There is something called respect that is lacking from a lot of bosses.

@swm-sm6cu Right so that is why a minimum wage is a step in favor of the worker. It is making the bosses pay them something significant instead of just handing a few dollars to a kid being supported by their parents. The bosses are either going to have to take a pay cut or probably be priced out of the market. Greed doesn't always pay.

They act like people with low paying jobs aren't essential, but they are. Who is going to shovel out your car, take care of the elderly, feed the kids in school, etc? It is not just teens with rich parents doing these jobs. What about technicians in automotive, heating and cooling, communications industries, etc.? They get paid around minimum, but they are doing complex skilled labor that not just anyone can do even with a college degree.

A lot of people are overpaid for doing next to nothing at the management level. If someone is working for a boss, they are integral to that company's success. They should share in the profits instead of being treated like a wage slave. The boss gets to set the rules, but he shouldn't take advantage of the workers. These billion dollar corporations such as Walmart are taking advantage of the system. They pay minimum wage, expect maximum effort, and then expect the taxpayers to foot the bill for SNAP which you can't even get indefinitely if you are not disabled, plus rental assistance which is very hard to come by with long waiting lists, Medicaid which is full of fraud, etc. That is not a good system. A wage of $15 per hour is about the minimum you need to survive in this country. It is the minimum you need to pay for college without taking out huge loans and then begging the government to forgive them. It is the minimum you need to save for a down payment on a house or car. If teens want jobs, they can do odd jobs for neighbors. I have tons of neighbors begging for people to shovel them out because the landscape companies are too busy. This country with its trickle down economic theory has been taking advantage of the poor for too long. You can call it socialism or whatever you want. I think it is justice. More wages means more taxes paid, less reliance on government assistance, and more independence and self respect among the workers. I think you are going to try harder to do a good job when you know you are being compensated at a level that is making a difference in your life and isn't just a tip for being a good kid staying busy at a job.
