  4. You can't find private landlords anymore. They all work through leasing companies and realtors who have their preferred list and will exclude certain people from getting in anywhere decent. Housing isn't a right anymore, it is a privilege, and an elite one at that. Leasing companies are truly heartless and detached no matter what they advertise to the contrary.

  6. They hired a lawyer. He needs to demand they make all repairs and keep the rents in the same range. Drive this landlord so crazy that he gives up or complies with the law. Can the 93 year old live with her son? She is ready to kick the bucket like no one wants her around now. They can't keep treating people this way. No one is left to keep renting luxury units, and they sit empty.

  7. To me it is crazy that almost no one in these comments has sympathy for these people while Americans are being run out of their homes left and right. If the average one-bedroom apartment is now $1,700, how are people supposed to afford that? These places look trashy, but they are the only homes these people have. How about making them the apartments before demolishing their camp? I kind of think the promise of a big housing project right on the site they were camping is nothing but an excuse. It will more likely be a parking lot. You don't know what there was stolen and what wasn't. Imagine someone thinking so little of everything you worked for that they just trashed it? Saying these people don't want help when you don't know them and never talked to people like them is very disingenuous. People in a camp would much rather have a shower than bathe in a dirty river, much rather wash dishes in a sink than use dirty river water, would much rather have the dignity of a real home, etc. Every once in a while, you meet a really burned-out veteran who would rather keep camping outside or some alcoholic who was abused who feels trapped indoors, but mostly, these people would rather have a place they can call home that isn't some dumpy refugee camp.
