  1. She is probably being forced out for being old. It is probably age discrimination. They probably want to have a yuppie kind of atmosphere not cater to elderly. The young girl got to stay, but the old couple is probably better able to pay any increase. Where are old people supposed to go? It isn't so easy for them to move. Those are nice apartments. The landlord is taking advantage of the desirability of the area and trying to social engineer the whole place. A lot of landlords are horrible. Most take advantage any way they can. When you have a corporation running things, they have even less heart and are even less personal about the way they treat people. With rents going up it is harder and harder to find affordable housing. If you can buy a small house you are in charge of, that is probably your surest bet.

  2. They probably want everyone homeless, and if they can't rerent, they will write it off as a tax loss for their huge corporation.
