I am thinking that. I would take what I can get and sue later. The landlord is going to take nonpayment of rent as an excuse to evict them in court.

@karenkoe7096 An eviction on your record means no future landlord will rent to you either. If they take the money and run now, they can sue for more damages later because they were under duress.

They still won't find anything unless they have a lot of money. Affordable places are disappearing with only a few left here and there as part of housing lotteries.

They are being robbed though.

@kimberlycarpenter7667 They are treated like rodents. This is human beings in a home that they worked hard for in a neighborhood that they are a part of. You can't just say it is someone's property and they can run people out like vermin. One lady was there for 40 years and is elderly with a walker. Where can she go? There is nowhere affordable and with so much space besides. This is a whole community being destroyed; thousands of people being made homeless so the owner can profit a little more. Maybe the way the system works, they should take the money and run, but when you have nowhere to go, that doesn't seem like a doable option. If the state condemned your house, they pay fair market value. A man just bought his home for over a hundred thousand, but they offer him $14,000 to abandon it. That is robbery.

This is genocide like what is happening in Gaza to a much lesser degree, but the same idea, creating homelessness that leads to death. They want to pretend these people can just move on when everything affordable is being bought up for redevelopment and pricing them out. The mayor has to pass a law not just chat with the owner who is always nice to him. Pass a law that they can't do this. This is endangering the public. It is zoned as affordable housing, so it has to stay that way, redeveloped or not. I don't think these people will win by not paying rent and refusing to leave. If they take the $14,000, then can move this into a storage and pay for maybe some cheap motel for a few months. Then what? Who really knows? No one seems to care. It will be so much worse if they are suddenly driven out with only $3,000 and what they can carry out with them. Has anyone ever won against the trailer park redevelopers? They hold all the cards, and they know it. The residents are just serfs and paeons who can be shoved out at will. They need renters' protections passed as laws. These are not squatters but paying long term tenants. They should have rights.

That is assuming they have a place to go. Most likely they will wind up in a cheap motel for say $1,800 per month until the money runs out. Then storage is like $500 per month.
