Let a judge decide this gray area and don't pay the increase. To me, a lease is a binding contract. The renter can't just break it and move out without owing the rest of the term's rent because they found lower rent elsewhere. Why should a landlord then get to take advantage of the tenant financially by asking for more money during the lease just because area market rents are up? Especially in affordable housing, you would think there would be rent increase caps at the end of lease terms also. The politician who looked at the lease for two months and has no answer should get on that. Aside from the legal issues, this is just inhumane. They are causing these elderly who just want to live in peace in their final years to be up all night with worry. Where are they supposed to move to, a homeless camp? A nursing home that drugs up the patients and costs way more for the state through Medicaid and Medicare? This is very bad city management all around.
