  2. I think the grandmother is overbearing. All she does is complain and have negativity about everyone. Maybe they get sick of her judgments and drink themselves to death. Vanya doesn't seem so bad. He was willing to tell all his information. He wasn't making excuses. Who knows why he is with that woman, maybe she put a spell on him or maybe his grandmother drives him nuts. People who drink are usually trying to avoid some kind of problem or upset that they don't deal with. He knows why he drinks, and just stopping won't solve his pain. I think the grandmother makes him feel like a loser and a failure. I got really sick of hearing her complaining just in this interview. If she was positive and encouraging, maybe he would feel more like helping her and for free.
