The prepper channels keep saying to buy what you need now, stock up, it will all disappear soon. It puts you into such a panic that you want to buy all you can. They act like don't hold onto money, it will be worthless, buy things you will need years from now, buy things to barter with. I don't know if hoarding a bunch of stuff that you can't manage is going to help if you can't even figure out how to deal with what you have.
The food prices are way up, and people are just used to the culinary luxury lifestyle. They aren't into eating meager humble meals. They want culinary adventures. A little bag of gourmet food is like $60 for six things. I paid $16 for a sandwich from a refrigerator case. It was good but worth $16??? A bottle of soda, $4. Etc.
I guess with no real social cohesion or connection, buying things makes you feel a part of the community. People go out to shop, dine, spend. People who just want to hang out, they are looked at like they are bums. You want to see a show, the cheapest ticket is $39.
