I don't think people want a house for the American dream. I think they want it for independence. At least that is what I would want it for. It is miserable dealing with neighbors in apartments who want to drive you out with harassment and landlords who come up with petty rules and threaten to kick you out over arbitrary disputes. Now it is scary to have a house though because of these squatters' rights where they break in if you aren't home. I think that is being done so that people are too scared to own homes and then won't mind being crammed in to some 15-minute city with minimal living space. People are way too antisocial and self-centered to make apartment living viable now. Neighbors end up being like spies there able to see everything you do and meddle in your life. They aren't friendly or helpful except in the most superficial fake way that would convenience them. It is very demoralizing.
