Two can live cheaper than one. It is all about budgeting and sharing responsibilities. One guy working five jobs sounds like he was trying too hard. Maye the girlfriend was expecting too much from him and it was time to break up anyway. Home economics was a subject they used to teach in schools. It is about budgeting, saving money, and learning to do things yourself like cooking and sewing, housecleaning and laundry. If you have good money management, it is worth as much as an extra job. If you have the type of partner for instance who insists on going out for expensive coffee drinks every day as a priority, you are going to go broke. You have to be in agreement about money. If one likes to save and do things themselves, the other can't be sabotaging the whole process spending however they want.

@frednirks3718 Those classes were really important, cooking, sewing, wood shop, metal shop and even automotive shop. The more of these things you can do for yourself, the better.
