They pyramid is a guide. It shows you proportions. You need a lot of carbs, a little protein, some calcium foods if not dairy, fats and sugars sparingly at the top, and a wide variety of produce. If you eat like that, you don't have eat the exact amount they say that would apply to maybe an average active man. You need to eat the amount suited to your size and activity level.
If you follow this guide as a vegan, it works. Vegans fail when they eat only fruits and vegetables. You need to eat way too much to get enough protein. If you throw in beans and nuts, legumes and seeds, then you will get enough. That can be your meat group. If you cut out all fats, you will also get sick. You need to eat some; it is recommended 2 Tbsp a day.
An old lady in a nursing home might be okay with two slices of toast, a bowl of pea soup, an apple and a salad. She isn't going to eat the maximum servings of everything every day.
