This is very subtle, but the implication I got is that Donald Jeffrey is not free to leave if he wanted to. Karsten Simrall would hunt him down and kill him if he tried to leave. He has to do whatever he is asked to do around the farm, there is no specific job title. He has a nice house and nice lawn furniture, glasses, and looks healthy, but he might have no car, no money and no way to leave if he wanted to. I don't know if he has a wife or family, children. Maybe he doesn't and that is why the geneolgoist was crying when she found out about the dead ones. Maybe he can only have family if Karsten agreed to it, and only have friends if Karsten agrees to it. He seemed very controlling the way he said, if anyone hurts Donald, I'll kill him, and Donald is a liar so you can't trust what he says. All Donald said were the nicest things about Karsten, shockingly so. He said he could go in his house and sleep if he wanted to.
