One of their arguments to get a new trial is that a Satanic cult had been murdering pregnant women in the area and casing them out as victims. They are claiming that they are the true murderers, but who is to say that Scott and his family aren't involved in that also? His mother is very witchy looking, and they all showed very little remorse for Lacy and even their own grandson. If he didn't actually kill her himself, he probably set it up, and if he didn't dump the body in the bay himself, he probably knew who did.
