  1. Putin is just positioning himself to be ready to react to what the west does as its next move. If the west would back off, Putin would stay out. If they bring in armaments, as they seem to be doing, he is going to be on alert. The surrounding countries are getting western troops and I guess equipment: Poland, Romania, the Baltic states maybe also. This is just going to make Putin set up more of his own troops. If Ukraine really doesn't want war, doesn't want to face off against Putin, they need to tell the west to back off, refuse to join NATO, and maybe stop exterminating the Russians in Donetsk. I have a feeling that they won't, that they have the same megalomaniacal passion for dominance that Hitler had. Russia won't stand another betrayal like that.
