  1. This was put forward in an academic journal article in 2009. His argument seems plausible. The only way we have to date the death of Herod was that Josephus says it happened after a lunar eclipse and before Passover. There was a partial lunar eclipse in 4 BC and a total lunar eclipse in 1 BC. Steinmann also says that all the events that Josephus reports as having happened between the death of Herod and the next Passover would require a minimum of 41 days (and likely more), but there were only 29 days between the eclipse and Passover in 4 BC, while there were 92 days between the eclipse and Passover in 1 BC.
