Ticks, Roaches, Crab Lice, bed bugs . . . these are the arthropod species that thrive under mankind's hegemony. I would be interested to know how Dust Mites are doing. And aphids.
However, the number one insect on Earth, in terms of ecological utility is the mosquito. Mosquito larvae are the food of choice for fish, water insects, amphibians, and small reptiles. The adults are consumed in trillions every year by birds and bats. Usually, wherever humans are, there are mosquitoes, too. I wonder how the worldwide mosquito population is riding out this particular apocalypse.
Personally, I blame Big Chemical Corps. Mass marketed insecticides (marketed as Pesticides, as though they only kill the bugs you don't like . . . as if) are the evident cause of the decline of useful insects. A lot of million dollar checks are dangled in front of otherwise reputable science folks and . . . voila! It's not their fault!
Except it is. A culture of lies is a sick culture. It's time for a little trust busting, I bet.
