  1. As of WW2, large warships in well supplied ports were connected to "shore steam" in order to keep systems running (and the turbines or pistons warmed) when in port. Battleships could take 8 hours to work up a head of steam from a cold start. Some ports had Cold Start tenders for this purpose.
