  2. I had thought that all main armament on the centerline was a main point of separation between "old" battleships and "modern" battleships (and armored cruisers, et al.) From my current point of view, Dreadnaught was an innovation in fuel and propulsion technology, more than it was an innovation in armament-especially placement.
