Perfect for running down the Panzerschiffe . . . but so were the Dunkerques, and the RN Battlecruisers Hood, Repulse, and Renown.
Otherwise? One rudder. Total fail. About as maneuverable as a Habukkuk supercarrier.
With that said, an Alaska would've been dandy for all the usual duties of projecting the flag (as opposed to force multiplication) and giving the offbase local hookers a best week ever wherever she might call. Unfortunately, one Alaska cost almost as much as a full size battleship to operate.
I would've liked to see each 40mm quad replaced by a dual 3"/50 (adding a bit of topweight), a second rudder, and a spiffy, Red, White, and Blue, paint job.
