  1. The most effective ship, qualified by damage done to target, has to be Indianapolis, whose A--Bomb caused more casualties than any naval battle ever. Sure, she was lost, but her contribution is widely claimed to have shortened the war by two years and reduced its eventual cost by one million possible casualties.
