  3. There's an area on every ship not covered by the main armor belt-it's called the superstructure. A LOT of stuff is outside the main armor. Paint lockers. Torpedoes. Depth Charges. Rudder(s). AA Rockets . . . wait-what? Make the armor thick enough all over the ship and you get an island if you're lucky. Or a sea mount. The 6" vs 8" thing includes a range component, too, as you suggested with the "single broadside" comment. If both captains are aware of the possibility of enemy fire damaging critical systems outside the main belt* then it becomes a stern chase, does it not? The 8" regains relevance. *Slightly plunging fire from astern can cause devastating damage, too.
