A thoughtworthy post as usual and thanks for it. A point about early generation RaDAR: Prinz Eugen and Bismarck did pretty well with Seetakt, depsite its primitive nature. RaDAR gunnery control trumps optical for long range and foul weather engagements. Also, in most navies, cruiser torpedoes were meant to finish off targets in order to preserve main battery rounds. Wartime experience showed that ruined, but unsunk, warships often required this coup de grace as a time saver. It is, after all, a lengthier process to sink a ship by letting in air, compared to letting in water. Moreover, cruisers were meant to run and gun and were not armored well enough to stand in close and batter a resisting target with torpedoes. 5" guns on Destroyers can rip a cruiser to shreds if it gets too close . . . like torpedo range. The type 93 Yari is the sole exception and more than a few of the IJN's cruisers were undone by onboard torpedo detonations.
