@jussim.konttinen4981 If I might be excused a short rant: "Forgive me, sir, but, as far as the south goes, the British stole it from the Boers with great loss of life, the invention of Concentration Camps, and systematic disenfranchisement of native peoples. And leave us not scruple against mentioning the Zulu war, or any of a dozen other bloody campaigns against indigenous peoples eager to form autonomous nations or tribal preserves. Great Britain was, for the Africans, an Unnatural Disaster. Churchill, himself, was proud of his participation in the absorption by force of lands owned by others through treaty. Read his memoirs. The man was a first rate historian, if somewhat understandably biased."

The classic picture of the great man, hands on hipbones, shoulders thrust forward, as if to proclaim to all that:
"I'm a little teapot,
Short and stout,
I'm quite a loony,
Here's my best pout.
When I get all cranked up,
Hear me shout,
"The trains run on time!
And now get out!"
I'll let myself out. I gotta catch a Storch. I don' wan' 'em to leave without me.
And a point about creduilty in high office:
If you can see white all around someone's eyes, be attentive: he or she (or gender nonspecific) might be having a seizure or psychotic episode. Or he/she might be so methed up he or she can't close them anymore. You only see people like that in Anime, where the artists have no brief to provide accurate representations of the human form. Even there, they do it to make a point, not suggest anyone really looks like that. Except Il Duce. He breaks all the rules . . . especially those regarding editorial accuracy, honor among thieves, and Italia's role in the Great War*.
*Which see. The Great War (another Indy and team project) covers Italian hopes and dreams, and nightmares, during the war years very well.

The more we study history, the better arguments we can raise against abusers of the public trust. This particular episode-of Czechoslovakia and its coming dismemberment-is a crucial bit of essential history about which we should each be conversant.
The rise of extremism, hiding behind aggressive, divisive, rhetoric, paid for by special interest groups, must be monitored and interrupted with swift justice when necessary. Freedoms of speech are not open license for rabble rousers to incite us to extremist acts, each against his fellow. Remember: those who preach hate (on both sides of our illusory political divide) are the real enemies of society.
We are in this together, both the righteous left/right (choose your favorite) and the egregious left/right (choose your favorite). We all want to bask in the subjective sun of success. Not all of us define the word "success" the same, however, and therein lies the supposed "chink" in the armor of our national unity through which the powers of hatred and dissolution enter into our existence.

At this point (the late 19th and early 20th centuries), civilization is merely a white flag covering a world-wide culture of outright extortion, resource rapine, kidnapping, and wholesale murder, in other lands, while abhoring them in your own. Colonialism, under whatever name, is crime knowingly, and willfully, inflicted upon the innocent. It never lifts up; it always grinds down. Institutionalized bullyism.
Not like today . . . today we have sanctions . . . which cause widespread starvation and epidemic without you needing troops on the ground. PROGRESS! Anyone who willingly allows, or manipulates a situation so that innocents starve, while he waxes rich on their misery, is <drumroll> an asshole. Better stop that crap . . . or I'll marry your daughter. THEN you'll be crying.

Gandhi's "The Story of my Experiments with Truth" makes a great read-and an effective counter to Churchill's otherwise excellent historian writings, which are tainted by the rose tinted glasses of Imperialist prejudice. I recommend reading both men, while keeping in mind they are, Gandhi and Churchill, highly partisan; the one an unrepentant racist and white supremacist*, and the other determined to advance the cause of people of color everywhere . . . especially in India. Here's Gandhi's book:
http://www.columbia.edu/itc/mealac/pritchett/00litlinks/gandhi/
W. Churchill was a firm believer in the "White Man's Burden" myth, which I urge you, one and all, to read up on. It is racist tripe of the lowest order.
And a quote from World War One: "Well, If you knows of a better 'ole, go to it."

Opinion piece here from a non expert:
"Modern" is perhaps a relative term in this context, rather than literal, and no offense meant.
It is my understanding that Italia was never able to adequately provide the full issue of assigned materiel to its divisions, even the best ones. Most of Italia's artillery park was WW1 relics, the issue of Machine Guns-a major factor in squad firepower-was so far behind it was beyond sad.
Even so, the L3/33 was probably useful, especially as it was light and easy to transport across the sea. So, too, were the Fiat Cr32 biplane fighters, though hardly as close support platforms. As I recall, Ciano was an aviator in this conflict. He described (I seem to remember) the experience of machine gunning infantry from the air as "exhilarating", or words to that effect. Italy also used poison gas in that war. Gas was a fickle mistress in those days.
Up to the last, Italy had great difficulty supplying more than a basic equipment, and much of that simply warmed over WW1 veterans. Her several excellent ideas, the Breda SMG, the Canone di 90/53, the P26/40 Medium Tank, and later fighter planes from Reggiane and Fiat among them, were above Italy's ability to produce en masse*. Even in peacetime, the amount of materiel required to field armored divisions at full strength would beggar Italian heavy industry of the 1935-43 period.
The real barrier to fielding modern equipment is, of course, oil**. Well, Italia had plenty of that . . . in potential. That's what Libya was for, right? And the Med was an Italian bathtub . . . wasn't it? It seemed so simple.
*The AS42 was an icon of the times. These were put to very good use in Africa. The "wandering" Motobomba was perceived as a possible war winner, while Germany still had planes capable of merchant shipping/naval strikes.
**Motorization is the main difference between ancient armies and modern ones, from the WW1/WW2 point of view. Consider that a field formation without motorized transport logistical network behind it cannot maintain high expenditure combat for long.
Thanks for the content and providing the forum.

Wild Bill on Racial Cleansing and the Human Way:
Modern Homo Sapiens conquered the co-extent Neanderthal, forced him, his women and children, into bondage and slavery, and ate his flesh once he was too worn out to work. Red hair and light color eyes are Neanderthal throwbacks, which tells us how we used his women. We retain memories of Homos Neanderthalensis and Floriensis through mythological accounts of "the little people", changelings, elves in the forests and shadows, and many others. Enslavement and subsequent consumption is bad enough, but, in perspective, we wiped out whole species, have been doing it as long as we have been able to organize against the rest. Man is a killing ape. We pick out something different (and weaker--that's how bullies work) and attack it with all our hearts, minds, and narratives. All of which is counterproductive to an insane degree. In fact, the whole purpose of civilization is to temper our mindless hatred of the unknown with mercy. That way we start to use and distribute with wisdom, rather than utter, mindless, greed.
I sure hope we reach that stage someday. I ain't seen it yet. South Park really said it best with their "Pussies and Dicks" satire on Social Activism and protest in the USA. We preach kindness and understanding, then move in ground troops and start killing civilians. Then we cry and apologize . . . or, at least, our disenfranchised political entities do. It makes twisted sense in the historical perspective. Our role models did it, and so do we. All hail Great Britain, who brought love and peace and civilization to both India and China! And Afghanistan. And South Africa. And to the Abos. How DARE they be happy without civilization!
It's starting to look like the wrong brand of humans triumphed.

"So come on all you northern men, ol' Snorri here has got a yen,
There's plenty of money to be made, depriving the monks of their tools of trade!
So put down your hoe and pick up a sword, whoopie, we're no longer bored!"
And it's Ein zwie drei, what are we sailing for?
Don't ask me just grab an oar, sling your shield on the gunnel board!
And it's voomf zex zeben, open up Valhalla's gate,
We're riding high on Pervitin, whoopie we're all jumpin' in!"

Fill in the blank: "_ _ _ _ is the last refuge of rogues, cheats, sex maniacs, drug addicts, and abusers of the public trust". Politics, Religion, Law, Carnivals, Medicine, Art, Sports, Academia; you name it; almost any human social situation or grouping suits the statement. My favorite answer is: "Standardized Testing". Gotta whack those moles before they put on airs. "Gerrymandering" is another favorite.
Add to that "war is the most efficient process for increasing the misery of the poor by other than political means".

How is a Free Love Bureau different from a Brothel? Price. The police and city officials can't take payoffs from an organisation that produces no cash flow.
As far as love goes, you do NOT get what you paid for. If the partner, paid or gratis, genuinely likes you. your profit is miraculous, undeserved, uplifting, and unrepeatable. If not, buyers' remorse is the inevitable concomitant. Additionally, the more frequently physically invested in the act a sex worker is, the more likely that sex worker will become an active transmission vector for various STDs.
Which advertises staid, boring, monogamy as a viable alternative. Perhaps a better life plan overall. As an old hippy, I don't want that to be true . . . but it is.
When, oh when, will those wiley Japanese invent an Android Sex Toy? The Otaku world needs to know! I've been in love with the idea since Fritz Lang dressed that foxy Brigitte Helm up in a robot suit for his monumental work "Metropolis".
