  2. Extensive quoting of diaries . . . Pick up copies (two volumes) of Japan's Imperial Conspiracy, by David Bergamini. Sometimes he reaches for a favorite fruit, sometimes he saws away at the tree instead of the branch, but his comparative insight presentation is both compelling and likely full of the real threads of whatever truth those involved are allowed to reveal . . . or believe. I found it a most delightful departure from hardline accounts, many of which suffer from unsupportable narratives, cherry-picking, and name dropping.
