Thought provoking and thanks for posting. From my perusal it seemed that, though there were the indicator copepods stuck to the sleeper here and there, I did not see one on its visible eye. Still, the eye was parblind in appearance. Perhaps the suspected copepod vector for adult blindness in these big sharks is not a primary cause? Hard to know with so little evidence in either direction, other than that provided by fishery bycatch. Naturally, one might take for granted that sea life around these exceedingly acrid areas trades reduced competition (compared with what might be found outside the volcanic influence) for reduced life span. I would be interested to know what feature or quality of the area makes it attractive to these metabolically warped denizens? Sharknado plus Volcano--eh? I see a movie coming . . .
