They were old enough to refuse; Charles Edward was only a small child who was yanked around, first one way drummed into his head then all that snatched away and a different culture with a language he didn’t speak was drummed into his head. His mother, along with all the nannies and caretakers, must’ve sounded like nonstop magpies threatening with everything they said: mind you do this, mind you don’t do that, mind you- mind you- mind you etc ad nauseam. My goodness, I’d have been a “nervous baby” myself growing up in that ridiculous, cruel nonsense, then having everything taken from me at every turn. How would a child be expected to think and feel, being treated like that? That’s nothing short of child abuse and neglect. Anyone else would’ve cracked under the pressure, and even he barely survived all that. Had it not been for a happy, successful marriage he might would’ve run screaming for the nearest asylum. How blessed to not be born into such as that, a ‘royal family.’ Royal what? A Royal lineage of confusion, cruelty and growing up under threats of “mind you this-and-that,” how utterly miserable. The British are ruled by German and Russian lineages, and they always end up going to war against the families into which they’re forced to marry and subsequently are born into. I’d be screaming for dissolving that ridiculous monarchy and installing a democracy, post-haste.
