  2. The field of cardiology in 1983 was not anywhere as advanced as what’s available today for cardiac patients. UAB wouldn’t have had anything to offer. He was a lot sicker for longer than people knew. Those close to him saw his extreme fatigue and illness. His secretary said she believed he had willed himself to coach his last year, but said she thought he wouldn’t make it through the season.
