  1. I disagree with the space issue in theaters. People don't want to sit and be BORED for 2hrs. I work at a movie theater and there's plenty of space and time for cinema style films you speak of. In Annapolis MD we have 2 Bow Tie cinemas which one caters to the more cinema crowd and the mall caters more to main stream audiences. We also have several small theaters in downtown that show a few movies, none of which have much of a marketing budget. Also when I drive by them which is literally every day since I'm a ride share driver also, the audiences are generally very old and I'm talking 70+ at one, the other is around the 40+ range. Theaters stay open not b/c of ticket sales/butts in the seat. They stay open from concessions so to stay open you cast a big net in hopes that those who attend buy concessions. Those people demand something they personally feel is worth not only the 8 hour shift they work but the 3 to 4 hour day they've dedicated to a film in which they will not receive anything from beyond an experience. The world no longer moves slow and Martin doesn't realize the reason those films of old were truly amazing was timing. Cinema was still very very new and even to this day, it's using the same formula of better tech puts butts in seats better service/food keeps the cinema in business. It's a business. This is factor was not tackled.

  2. I can say this about seating in a theater. Those who chose to sit as far back as possible are literally choosing the worse seat in the house next to those who sit in the first 2 lower rows. The middle of about every theater is the best seating for viewing/audio. Why? Because the sound designers cater to the middle row. As for eyes, we see at about 180 degree's meaning your angle of view will be full while sitting mid theater. Same goes for large IMAX or varients. Sitting to either left or right side is actually good for 3D viewing since screens are now mostly curved. That little offset adds inherent depth. I used to work in a movie theater and was a professionally trained photographer and audio engineer. My personal thought on Nolan choice is to be as viceral as possible. Nolan strives to add realism to his movies. Sound is taking the same approach he uses visually. If these guys have the mouths covered, I'd assume Nolans thought process is trying to out you the viewer in the scene as the FPV/3PV. When you watch Batman the Dark Knight in the intro scene, the clowns all have mask and he wants you to know they have mask and not microphones just so you hear them clearly. What they have to say isn't always that important. What's important is experiencing the film and allowing it to swallow you up. I tend to watch movies in my car. It has a very good surround sound system and being a small space reverbs very well. I still go to movies often. I'd actually like to see Nolan take on a James Bond film.

  4. I understand where you are coming from however you chose action scenes instead of dialogue scenes (Marvel). Why? Lets get something straight before a response. I was a cinematographer in college and started my own company with a friend during that time. I transitioned to more corporate and documentary work that didn't much require planning as it literally was documenting things as they were at the client request (paid services). My favorite films all time are Troy, Inception, Top Gun, Driver, Fight Club, Sunset Limited, The Lovely Bones, Django Unchained, Green Mile, CA Civil War, Dark Knight, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, Office Space, Locke, Lone Survivor, Hurt Locker and Cabin in the Sky My additional question is do you think large action set pieces are not cinema? (is this your interpretation of what Martin was speaking of) I ask that because, of your comparison clips and then think of films like Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade, Saving Private Ryan, Inception, Skyfall, Casino Royale, Sicario, The Last Emperor, Hero. But don't think I don't understand. Movies like Fences, A Beautiful Mind, Imitation Game, The Revanant, Titanic, Inglorious Bastards, Lawrence of Arabia are what he's talking about. It's funny though. I remember when James Bond Goldeneye was the greatest FPS the came HALO and purest complained I don't need the jump button or its got aliens. Is it good, does it check off all the boxes and move the culture/genre forward?

  5. The thing about Nolans films is you can watch them on mute. I've done this and you literally don't need audio for Tenet, Interstellar or Inception.
